From a Reading Specialist

I'm a former kindergarten and first grade teacher.  I have a masters degree in Reading and a Reading Specialist certification.  The last two years I have served as a Title One reading resource teacher at an elementary school.  I LOVE my job!  Teaching reading is my passion.

So imagine my surprise (and disappointment) when baby boy screamed and cried every time I tried reading to him.
What did I do?  I channeled by inner Disney fan and took the advice of Dory.  Just Keep Swimming.

Swim we did.  We tried reading before nap, after nap.  In the rocking chair, in the bed.  We read the classic fairy tales, we read the latest picture books.  We read books with only black and white pictures, and ones with colorful pictures. We read books with rhyme, and books with dialog.

Did it work? No. He still screamed and we could barely get through a few pages.
But we just kept swimming.
The reading specialist in me knew how important it was.

And now, 8 months later, he enjoys (insert tolerates) a short read aloud.
I even captured this picture of him independently "reading".

It made my Reading Specialist heart burst!

His current favorite genre: "crinkle books".  He gets to the crinkle the book while I read.

And mommas look what I found on Amazon.  Be still my Reading Specialist heart.  A baby newspaper.  I'm in love.
